Fisker Flop Bloom Boondoggle

Al Gore’s car company Fisker has finally done its flop.  The US DOE (us) will lose $139 million in the deal that takes the gangrene company into bankruptcy.

Fisker is the sister company to Bloom Energy and was brought to you by the same sponsors of Al Gore, John Doerr, and Colin Powell.   These three gangrene robbing hoods are now facing thermodynamic reality for the greenwashing Bloom did in Delaware, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina, Utah and elsewhere.

The Delaware permitting process continues to yield more evidence of lying by Bloom and its General Manager.   I now have a letter from the General Manager, Mr. Brockenborough, to the DNREC dated January 13,2012 that discusses the removal of sulfur in a sorbent bed (filter).  In fact that letter had an article on the removal of sulfur from natural gas in fuel cells and that article discusses the nature of the sulfur being thiols and sulfides.

The DNREC has told me in an email that no manifests for sulfur wastes have ever been submitted by Bloom to the DNREC.  I now have the DNREC staff investigating whether Thiols and Sulfides are considered hazardous if trapped on a sorbent.   Of course I know they are hazardous waste but we  are connecting all the dots of sulfur.

I also received the requirements for the operating permit at the second smaller site in Delaware, Bloom’s Brookside site.  The Operational Limitations Section 3 of the permit and in particular Paragraph 3.1.3 Total Hourly natural gas fuel consumption shall not exceed 0.019 MMFt3 per hour.

Well this was based on the 3 mw of boxes (15 of them) operating at the Bloom’s fake efficiency that over claims greenness of the coffins.  From the FOIA data from the DE PSC I have the actual 8 month average of the natural flow for 3 mw and this is 0.021 MMFT3 per hour a flow that exceeds the Operational Limitations of the permit.   Naturally I have asked the DNREC to enforce the limitations and shut the Brookside plant down.

The same section 3 of the same permit also deals with sulfur.
3.1.6 The desulfurization beds (filters) shall be operated and maintained according to manufacturer's recommendations and good engineering practices to ensure that the rate of removal of sulfur  from the fuel cells does not result in in emissions that are in excess of the rate contained in Condition 2.1.4 of this permit.

5.2.3 states Documentations that the desulfurization beds (filters) are  operated and maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and good engineering practices.

Wow we know there is sulfur removal but there are no manifests for sulfur waste.   Al Gore is great at inventing stuff and will soon claim he made E-waste out of the sulfur.  Truthfully Bloom is in big trouble there in Delaware.

If Delaware shuts down the Bloom power generation operations in Delaware that not only lied in the permit application but now are lying in their operation, Bloom could join the ugly Fisker sister in bankruptcy.   Al Gore has the skin of an elephants and will still appear on Charlie Rose making statements about how he saves the world from oy-yil and car-bon.  He will use a power point slide to show that the sixteenth element of the periodic table when bonded with cadmium exhibits semiconducting properties and can be used in solar cells.   Yes Al cadmium sulfide which is very toxic can be considered as e-waste.  Unfortunately the Bloom coffins do not have cadmium sulfide.  Also Al cadmium sulfide is yellow not green.

LA is Not LaLa Land It Is LED Land

Finally a government green program that is not a waste of money.   The US DOE reported today that Los Anegeles has undertaken the largest project in the world to replace old street lamps with new light emitting diode (LED) ones.    Here is the US DOE press release.

By Jim Brodrick, lighting program manager
The world's largest light emitting diode (LED) conversion project to date is under way in Los Angeles, California.
In the project’s first phase alone, the city retrofitted over 141,000 streetlights, reducing energy use by 63% and saving the city $7 million a year in electricity costs. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 47,583 metric tons annually, which is equivalent to removing about 10,000 cars from Los Angeles roadways per year.
Lessons learned from this project were discussed during the Energy Department’s Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium (MSSLC) webinar in September. More than 560 attendees gained insight from Ed Ebrahimian, director of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Street Lighting. To date, more than 370 municipalities, utilities, and government agencies have signed on as primary members of MSSLC. For the complete story, see the EERE Blog.

I say Bravo LA.   I wrote my book on energy and sustainability in 2003, ten years ago.   In my book I opined that LED technology would become a widespread methos to lower power consumption in lighting.  Ten years ago we had just started to covert traffic lights to LED.  Now cities around the world are converting street lights.  Home owners are also switching to LED lights.

LED’s are solid state devices.  Just as the transistor (solid state) replaced vacuum tubes in radios in the 1950s and just like LCD TVs (solid state) replaced tube TVs over the past decade, LEDs will replace incandescent light bulbs in the coming decade.  The US has one very successful company in the LED space.  This company is Cree who are located in North Carolina.  Many Asian manufacturers have entered the LED lighting market and China in particular is making a strong push into LED manufacturing.

The LED’s are fabricated on sapphire wafers.  Integrated circuits are fabricated on silicon wafers, but manufacturing methods are similar.  The emerald is the green stone but the sapphire is truly the green precious stone.  Another US company GT Advanced Technology has leading edge technology in ultra-pure sapphire crystals.   Apple just announced a very large deal with GT to supply Apple with unique crystals.   My guess is that Apple needs curved sapphire crystals for their new curved handheld devices.   Yes the flat iPhone and the flat iPad are to be replaced by curved devices that are far easier to hold.

The green machine applauds companies like Cree and GT Advanced Technology that actually offer green products that do help the world.  They don’t get the press that Tesla does but they deliver green goods that are not pyrophoric.   It certainly looks like Tesla Motors has a lot of explaining to do about their self-igniting Model S that only achieves 22 miles per gallon equivalent if the real world data for power generation and distribution efficiencies are used.   In ten years time Tesla will be long forgotten and the LEDs installed on LA streets will still be burning bright.

LED lighting market value in 2014 to reach US$17.8 billion, says LEDinside
Press release, November 20; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 20 November 2013]
According to data from LEDinside, the LED lighting market value in 2014 will come to US$17.8 billion, and the total shipments of LED lighting products will reach 1.32 billion units, representing 68% on-year growth.
LEDinside pointed out that the global LED lighting product replacement tide is caused by falling LED product prices. With replacement lamps being the most obvious, bulbs and tubes are the most popular ones in the market, which account for 38% and 24% of LED lighting product demand in 2013, respectively. In addition, the demand for LED luminaires in the future will gradually rise, the firm said.
According to the data, the growth rate of LED lighting market demand volume in North America is expected to reach 72% in 2014. In addition, in Latin America the LED lighting market is growing rapidly, especially the LED commercial lighting market, with the growth rate of LED lighting market demand volume expected to reach 64% in 2014. The growth rate of LED lighting market demand volume in Europe is expected to reach 69% in 2014.
LEDinside also estimated the growth rate of LED lighting market demand volume in China to reach 86% in 2014.

Hoping to Stop The Moolah For Sulfah In The Garden State

I wrote and faxed this letter today

November 19, 2013
To State of New Jersey Board of Public Utilities – Tricia Caliguire
Via Fax 609-292-2264

Re Imposition of standby charges re distributed generation
Docket No. GO12070600

Dear All at the Board of Public Utilities

I am an award winning chemical engineer and journalist.  The National Newspapers Association awarded me and my paper (Tiburon California Ark) first prize for a serious column that exposed the Bloom Energy greenwashing boondoggle in Delaware.

I have a copy of a letter dated May 3, 2013 that Mr. Murray E. Bevan Esq. submitted to you on behalf of Bloom Energy.   That letter does not paint the complete picture of the actual real life performance of the Bloom Boxes.  In particular Bloom hid solid toxic waste that contains sulfur and that has to be periodically removed from the power generation site.  That is how they have virtually zero sulfur emissions into the air.   Additionally performance data made available under the FOIA by the Public Service Commission in Delaware show the Bloom boxes emit far more carbon dioxide per megawatt hour than Bloom claims on their website and also the boxes have a capacity factor of only 80%.

I suggest you do not allow Bloom Energy to get away with hurting the people of New Jersey as they have done in California, Delaware, and Connecticut.

Sincerely,
Lindsay Leveen

Bloom Grabs Dollah Hides Sulfah

The summary of the Bloom Boondoggle is as follows:

November 11, 2011 Bloom submits a CZA permit application with 14,410 pounds a year of sulfur oxide air emissions and the following list of solid wastes:
·         Paper wastes -3,000 pounds per year
·         Plastic wastes -1,000 pounds per year
·         Glass wastes – 500 pounds per year
·         Metal waste – 500 pounds per year and
·         E-Wastes – 10,000 pounds per year

January 13, 2012 Bloom’s Consulting Environmental Engineer (Beringer of Duffield Associates) emails the Delaware DNREC staff that Bloom removes sulfur oxide as a solid on filters (beds) and the permit application should show only 47 pounds a year of sulfur oxide air emissions.  The remaining 14,363 pounds per year of sulfur oxides are removed on the filter prior to the fuel cell stack.

February 10, 2012 Mr. O’Mara as Secretary of the Delaware DNREC issues the completeness report that has sulfur oxides air emissions of 14 pounds per year and lists the identical solid wastes as the November application that are as follows:
·         Paper wastes -3,000 pounds per year
·         Plastic wastes -1,000 pounds per year
·         Glass wastes – 500 pounds per year
·         Metal waste – 500 pounds per year and
·         E-Wastes – 10,000 pounds per year

The crux of the crime is that 14,396 pounds per year of sulfur oxides was made to disappear in Mr. Omara’s completeness report.     A case of Bloom Grabs Dollar Hides Sulfur!   Bloom has grabbed 24,802,576 dollars in the last 18 months.  They have hid many pounds (not the UK currency) of sulfur.   Dollar rhymes with sulfur if you are from Bloomland where dollar is pronounced Dollah and sulfur is pronounced sulfah

The method of disappearance is given in the Bloom Patent No 7,422,810 where Bloom states the sulfur is converted to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) the poison that makes rotten eggs smell.  The hydrogen sulfide is trapped on the filters (beds).  More mass is added to the sulfur waste stream due to the mass of the filters.   The entire mass of sulfur laden solid waste has to be removed as hazardous solid waste but is never mentioned in Mr. O’Mara’s list of solid wastes.

Hydrogen sulfide is clearly a hazardous waste and is a byproduct of the Bloom process yet no Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) was requested by the DNREC.  My complaint of fraud against Bloom and of dereliction of duty by the DNREC including its Secretary is that 14,396 pounds of sulfur oxide waste per year was made to disappear.

Mr. Shawn Tucker Esq.  a former deputy attorney general for the State of Delaware acted as the agent for Bloom to obtain the CZA  permit.   I have no way of knowing Mr. Tucker’s involvement in the disappearance of toxic sulfur but this should be investigated as well.

Note waste rhymes with distaste even in Bloomland where politicians are simply bought for a few dollahs .  Hydrogen Sulfide does not rhyme with anything it simply is a poison that stinks.
